About

Joe Cohen works primarily with mixed materials including fabric, textiles, metal and found objects to create sculptures and paintings that explore our relationship to the sacred. He also works in video, drawing from his background as a documentary filmmaker.

His focus on fabric is an ode to the original industries that his great-grandparents worked in when they moved to the US and the UK as Jewish refugees. His work explores the concept of the sacred by examining different modes of connection and community through the stories of fabric within historical and religious traditions.

Joe has produced and directed multiple documentaries, dance, and commercial films, including artist profiles such as Ugo Rondinone for Eva Presenhuber Gallery and the Spring / Summer exhibition promos for MoMA. His films include a triptych film installation with the renowned choreographer Michael Clark, which screened at the Serpentine Gallery, the Barbican, Centre Pompidou and the National Museum of Scotland, as well as exclusives for Fuuucking Young and i-D magazine.

In October 2023, he presented his first solo installation, Tassel on Tassel, in the iconic DIY underground art garden space, Le Petit Versailles, run by Jack Waters and Peter Cramer in the Lower East Side, Manhattan.
